Hundreds of Californians, many of them poor and wheelchair bound, protested Wednesday against proposed budget cuts that could leave many struggling families homeless.
Yolanda James, a single diabetic mother with three children, said Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposed budget cuts would affect millions of people like her. She said many senior citizens and people with disabilities would have to go hungry or homeless.
“I am not only struggling, I am also suffering,” James said. “As a mother whose children rely on CalWORKs, I don’t know what we’ll do if the program is eliminated or cut deeply.”
CalWORKs provides temporary financial assistance and employment focused services to families with minor children who have income and property below state limits for their family size.
James said it is the difference “between having barely enough to eat and a roof over our heads and going hungry and homeless”. Read more…
